On Distant Shores
On Distant Shores (2011)

Length: 22 minutes
Music: Aaron Jay Kernis, "On Distant Shores"
Lighting: David Finley
Costumes: Pilar Limosner
Narration: Jacqueline Chambord

Shimmering, On Distant Shores evokes ancient myths while feeling thoroughly contemporary. "I had always thought that Helen got a bad rap," says Rioult as he set out to redeem Helen of Troy's reputation.

Rioult imagines that Helen is brought to Troy against her will.  Four god-like young warriors awaken to partner Helen in fleeting duets, in the end, she continues to walk in a path of light as the heroes fade into a dream.

On Distant Shores was developed in part through a space grant with LaGuardia Performing Arts Center's lab program.  Additional support was provided by and The Kenneth French Fund for New Works. Special support was provided by The O'Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation, Inc. Funds for the composer's commission were provided by the American Music Center Live Music for Dance Program.
